This topic was rather popular when I was training as a family mediator and it continues to be so. With the majority of family mediators in the UK coming from a legal background and with more lawyers coming on board every year, partly due to the tight connection between family mediation and legal system, some families are made to believe that to get a competent mediator, they should find a lawyer.

How helpful is this? And is this really the case? Would a psychologist or a marriage counsellor of many years of experience make a necessarily less competent family mediator than a lawyer with commensurate experience?
